"I want to make another Ranch"

Q: "Now that Bokujou Monogatari 2 is finally finished, how long did it take to develop?"

Wada: "We actually started development in June of last year, so it's been about a year and a half. We planned to follow the basic system of plowing the fields and planting seeds from the past (SFC and GB versions), so it wasn't like we were starting from scratch. I was thinking about what kind of work I wanted to make once I had finished creating some of the basic parts of the game, mainly with Yamatate (programmer) and Miyakoshi (scenario)."

Q: "Now that the hardware is the N64, were there more things that you could do?"

Wada: "Well, even with the N64, there were still many things that weren't able to come to fruition. The expressiveness increased dramatically due to the new hardware. You can make larger characters, and also add a lot of movement patterns. But because of that, the number of things I wanted to do also increased...I think we've achieved about 30% of what I wanted to do. 30% is a good batting average for baseball."
Yamatate: "From a programmer's point of view, many of the ideas were outlandish, but, thanks to trial and error, I was able to understand the fun and challenging nature of game development on the N64. I didn't get to utilize the 64's full capacity during the development of the game, but I did acquire a lot of know-how."
Wada: "That's why I feel like I want them to let me make another Bokujou Monogatari again. That way, I'll be able to add even more great ideas. Well, we're all going to have a hard time if we try to make that happen, I'm just speaking freely (laughs). [To staff] Good luck, everyone! (laughs)"

"I want to make another Ranch" (Continued)

Q: "Are there a lot of events in the game that make you contemplate life...?"

Wada: "In RPGs, there are many times where a person dies for the sake of the story. Like someone sacrificing themselves to save everyone. There have been times where I'll cry, even if I see it unfolding right then and there, but I don't think that real death is like that."
Miyakoshi: "People die, that's normal. This time, there's an event in which Elly's grandmother passes away, a scenario which occurs only after the Hero and the grandmother become friends. It might seem strange for someone to pass away after you've just become their friend, but I wanted to portray something like, 'Oh, I was able to be there in their final moments, because we were friends...I'm glad.' Of course, there's no narrative inevitability to that death."
Wada: "There are many events in Bokujou Monogatari 2 that are meant to give thanks to life and nature, because it's amazing to be alive. There are no events that dramatize the story, like many people dying, but I believe that it will make people think about how precious life is in general, in a natural way."
Miyakoshi: "There is no "have-to-do" strategy for the choices you make in the game, so you can choose what you feel is right. Think of yourself as the master of Flowerbud Village, living the way you want to live, and enjoy your everyday life."

Please give a final message for our readers.

Wada: "Even in the real world, there is a kind of happiness that we unexpectedly feel in our daily lives. It's the same happiness you feel when you take care of crops and cows in Bokujou Monogatari 2. It's not profound, but I think it's a worthwhile kind of happiness. So we hope you will find happiness in game, and in your own life."

In Bokujou Monogatari 2, when you're talking to people, you'll be presented with a choice. However, there are some options which will leave you wondering, "How should I answer, 'yes' or 'no'?"

"In conversations with people, sometimes you'll be faced with a choice that sticks out like "Choose this one, this is the right answer!", but in other cases, the answer you choose doesn't matter. In this case, the answer you choose doesn't make a big difference, so I hope you'll find your own answers. Even in the real world, there's always more than one answer, isn't there?"

Work on the farm, and many various festivals. Bokujou Monogatari 2 is very fun. I thought it would be very difficult to make such a game.

"To be honest, I was surprised by how many things everyone wanted to do. In particular, Wada and Miyakoshi demanded a lot more than I thought they would. The town was especially hard to deal with. For example, the weathervane acquired at the mine was going to spin on top of the roof of Rick's shop, and the church was going to have bells that would ring at weddings, and so on. There are things like that which didn't make the final build, but still, I think we achieved quite a lot."

The people who live in Flowerbud Village are really unique, aren't they? Who is the most popular character among the developers?

"Of all the women, the most popular is Lillia, the owner of Flower Lillia (laughs). She's a mature woman with a cute side and kind heart. That's something to admire, isn't it? Still, I've always liked Karen, even during the planning stage of development. I like the way she looks and everything about her. I love it when people treat me coldly. It's really hard to get to her heart, though. But it's worth a shot, right?"

There are many happy events in Bokujou Monogatari 2, but there are also sad ones, like your Grandfather's passing and the death of cows. What is the reason for this?

"People are born and people pass away. That's normal in real life. I wanted to portray that in the game, naturally, in a way that wasn't too preachy. Humans aren't the only living things -- animals have lives of their own, too. If you don't take care of them, they can get sick or even worse than that. People should be able to feel the importance of life naturally in the game. That's what I believe."
